Smart Tachographs

In June 2019 the European Council implemented one of the biggest shifts in tachograph regulation for over a decade by introducing the mandatory usage of smart tachographs in all new vehicles. The intention behind this was to improve the compliance with regulations and make enforcement easier. It also means that there is a blanket rule for all across Europe, leading to a levelling of the playing field from a competition perspective.

What Are Smart Tachographs?

A smart tachograph is a new smart technology designed to replace the pre-existing, analogue, method of recording vehicle and driver data. Advancements in technology, such as improved satellite positioning and interconnection with other telematics applications means that the use of these smart digital tachos is creating an easier to manage transport system. Smart tachogrpahs are far harder to manipulate than the older generation of recording devices and come with a number of mandatory features including:

• A Global Navigation Satellite System – Also known as GNSS or GPS+GLONASS this module is able to record more accurate and useful data around location and speed data. Location data can also be used to determine how long a driver has spent working in a particular country which can help in reducing unfair competition.
• An ITS Interface – The Intelligent Transport System interface allows valuable driver or vehicle data to be shared with other systems for analysis.
• Dedicated Short Range Communication Interface – This module is used mainly in a regulation and compliance scenario by monitoring bodies. Vehicle checks can be quickly undertaken and any hints of fraud will be flagged which may lead to further investigation and possible fines.
